Our story
ApostropheCMS grew out of a web agency in Philadelphia. Soon, we began to focus on clients with unique needs. Clients with a willingness to look beyond the more obvious technology choices to achieve a better experience, both for editors and the public. To meet those needs, we customized off-the-shelf tools for as long as we could stand it... which wasn't very long! So in 2010, we released version 1.0 of ApostropheCMS as an open source project.
Open source helped us grow our reach beyond our traditional client base. Over time, enthusiasts who discovered Apostrophe in those early days became key customers. We began to work with larger clients with more ambitious requirements, like multitenancy and internationalization. As our business grew, we realized it was time for ApostropheCMS to stand on its own two feet as a company. That was 2019.
Over time, our offerings evolved to include a mix of paid features, hosting services, and professional services. That business model is key both for us and for the ApostropheCMS open source project: a healthy balance that ensures sustainability. But open source remains at the root of what we do. There are many benefits, but but this matters most: offering an open source CMS allows teams standing in our shoes, circa 2010, to discover that the CMS experience can be better for everyone.
In short: empathy is everything.
In 2026, we are privileged to work with a diverse range of customers. Many of our key partners are multitenant SaaS companies, building their own unique features, bringing in ApostropheCMS to ensure there is no gap in the woodwork between their own functionality and the on-page editing experience their customers expect. Web agencies are still very much engaged with Apostrophe. And global companies also rely on it for their own sites. What all of these customers have in common is a willingness to engage with craft: to build something better, and deliver the best experience.
As we look to the future, we look forward to delivering the features that do the most to improve the experience for everyone. But most importantly, we look forward to continuing to work with our customers, as well as the open source community. Because at the end of the day, people are what it's all about.
Our Team
Tom Boutell is our co-founder and CEO. He takes care of the big picture, while remaining engaged on a technical level. And let's just throw this in: he helped invent the PNG file. He's been working to break down barriers to participation on the web ever since.
Lindsay Ifill is our Product Manager. She makes sure the road appears before you drive over it. It happens when she says it happens! And when it doesn't, she's even more instrumental to our success.
Stuart Romanek is our Lead Product Designer. He is responsible for the DNA of Apostrophe. The DNS is somebody else's problem. He goes all the way back to our agency days in South Philly.
Bob Means is our Developer Relations Engineer. He's responsible for documentation and delivers much of our most technical support. When we talk about empathy, we definitely mean Bob. He is also the only person on the team with a donkey.
Miro Yovchev is our Lead Developer. He approaches every problem with a rare combination of brilliance, enthusiasm, and willingness to change course. He is also our most dedicated PC gamer.
Alex Gilbert is a co-founder and former CEO. He plays an active role in strategic partnerships. His collection of tabletop games is legendary.
Geoff DiMasi is a co-founder and former co-CEO. He continues to contribute in both operational and strategic roles. He founded P'unk Avenue, the agency where ApostropheCMS originated. He also co-founded Indy Hall, one of the longest-running coworking spaces in the United States.
