CMS media management: common questions answered

Not for most teams. The built-in Media Library handles upload, organization, optimization, responsive delivery, cropping, focal point, and reuse across the site. Teams managing large asset libraries across multiple systems or with existing enterprise DAM infrastructure can connect an external DAM via the Media Sources extension on Assembly. For teams evaluating whether they need a DAM, the Media Library is designed to be sufficient without one.

When an editor uploads an image, ApostropheCMS generates multiple size variants automatically, which means no manual preparation is required. The image widget uses a srcset attribute so browsers select the most appropriate variant for the current context and screen size. The default fallback uses a full variant capped at 1140×1140px. Developers can configure variant sizes and srcset behavior during project setup; editors never need to manage this directly.

Uploading, organizing, tagging, cropping, setting focal points, and running batch operations are all editor-facing capabilities that require no developer involvement after initial setup. Developers configure the supporting system: allowed file types, aspect ratio constraints, storage location. After that, editors manage media independently within those parameters.

The focal point tool lets editors mark the key subject of an image (such as a face or product) directly in the editing interface. ApostropheCMS uses that focal point to bias cropping and display toward keeping that area visible, regardless of aspect ratio or screen size. The focal point is stored per image placement, not on the source image, so the same image can have different focal points in different contexts across the site.

Yes, with one limitation: SVG files cannot be cropped. This is a technical limitation of the format. SVGs can be uploaded, organized, tagged, and placed on pages like any other image — they just don't support the crop tool. For SVGs used as icons or illustrations where cropping isn't relevant, this isn't a practical limitation.

Nothing. Cropping in ApostropheCMS is non-destructive. The original image is preserved in the Media Library exactly as uploaded. A crop applies only to the specific placement where it was made. The same source image can be cropped differently in different contexts across the site without affecting the original or any other placement.
